Burmese Mother and Child - Toungoo, Myanmar
We met this adorable girl and her mother waiting at the train station in Toungoo, Myanmar. The yellow powder on the faces is thanaka, known locally as "Myanmar make-up" and comes from a type of wood (mixed with water). Read more about our visit to Myanmar.
Pamiri Woman and Teacher - Langar, Tajikistan
This woman greeted us in English, which surprised us, and then invited us into her home in Langar, Tajikistan. She had studied English for two years in Khorog and then became a teacher in the village school in Langar, but had to stop working when she got married. She was eager to practice her English and seemed excited to have engagement with someone outside her family. Read more about our adventures in the Pamirs.

Tibetan Smile - Annapurna Circuit, Nepal
This Tibetan woman from Letdar was incredibly shy when we first entered the village. She became embarrassed when we admired her amulets; she tucked them into her clothes for safe-keeping. Eventually, she warmed up to us and gave us a smile and hearty wave as we left for Thorung Phedi base camp. Taken on the ninth day of the trek around the Annapurna Circuit in Nepal. Woman Selling Embroidered Items - Sapa, Vietnam
Embroidered blankets and bed covers are also offered along the trek. Women are out in the markets and selling along the paths, while the men and boys work more in the fields and the house. That's the main reason we have more photos of women than men - it wasn't just that the women's dress was more interesting and colorful. Read more about the hill tribes and trekking in Sapa.
