Bologna, City of Arcades - Italy
Known as porticos, these arcades play a prominent role in Bologna's architecture. This arcade led up to our B&B, and if you followed it for 2.5 miles (666 arches), it led to the San Luca church overlooking the city.
The porticos were built in the middle ages when there was an influx of students for the University and housing was needed. The porticos extended the width of the buildings, and the students' rooms were built on top.
