We saw this girl on her way home from school in a little village outside of Battambang. She waved to us and when we asked if we could take her photo, she stood there a bit afraid of the camera. These girls greeted us on the road in the southern Kyrgyz village of Sary Tash. We soon learned why their cheeks were so red: wind-burn. A brutally cold wind picks up in the evenings; it can stop you in your tracks. The night we stayed, the temperature dropped to 15 degrees Celsius below zero. And it was only early autumn.
