  • Jewish Cemetery - Krakow, Poland

    Jewish Cemetery - Krakow, Poland

The Jewish cemetery was part of our walking tour around the old Jewish quarter in Krakow. As the tour guide explained, the cemetery took a number of beatings, first by the Nazis in WWII, then by the Soviets whose heavy industry on the outskirts of town caused acid rain to erode the 400+ year-old tombstones. Metal covers on some of the tombstones are there to protect against acid rain. © www.uncorneredmarket.com

St. Mary's Church - Krakow, Poland

St. Mary's Church, having been repeatedly rebuilt, has existed in one form or another for close to 700 years. Besides housing the largest Gothic wooden altar in Europe, the church is also known for the trumpet call that is played hourly from the church’s tower. The call breaks mid-phrase in memorial to a famous 13th century trumpeter shot in the throat while sounding the alarm of a Mongol invasion. © www.uncorneredmarket.com

  • Old town Poznan, #Poland winding down from Christmas, ramping up to the new year. One of the fringe benefits of being based in Berlin. Hop a train and in a couple of hours, you're over the border drinking 1€ beers and eating piles of pierogies. via Instagram http://instagram.com/p/xPIk7OOWcP/

  • We Made It! 2015. Locals storm the monument on the main square, Old town Poznan, Poland. If you've never enjoyed a New Year's celebration in an Eastern European city, you must. Just choose one. They will buy the fireworks. There will be an official celebration and an unofficial one. It's the unofficial one that you must experience. And as New Years go, this was ideal. Explosive, but I kept most of my hearing and no cheap Russian champagne bottles exploded nearby. Do what needs doing, 2015! via Instagram http://ift.tt/1xw9YMY

  • A little of the old, a little of the new. Graffiti, cobblestones and castles on the streets of Szczecin, Poland. Audrey frames the Castle of the Pomeranian Dukes, the seat of the Duchy of Pomerania from 1121 to 1637, into view. The expanse of history in this part of the world shows that while empires sometimes last longer than we might imagine, nothing is forever. We are taking part in the @RockportShoes #MyDailyAdventure #PoweredbyRockport campaign. Stay tuned for more such adventures in the coming weeks... via Instagram http://ift.tt/1JkYUEt
