It's difficult to believe a place of manmade wonder this beautiful can even exist. The sassi (cave dwellings) town of Matera, Italy in the southern province of Basilicata. Among the most stunning towns I've seen in all of Italy, even on a day of spotty weather. (Some might argue *the* most.) Monopoli - Puglia, Italy

Monopoli, Italy -- a southern Adriatic seaside town whose old town streets look like an architectural melange of Roman, Venetian and other influences from throughout its 2500 year-old history. This stretch along the coast and port looks to me a bit like Greece, but the 4-hour mid afternoon pause felt most certainly Italian.

Trullo in Puglia's Itria Valley - Italy

Sunset on our "trulli" farm stay in the valley outside the town of Martina Franca, Italy. A trullo is the traditional Puglian (Apulian) stone hut with a cone roof, dating as far back as the 14th century. Salice Salentino - Puglia, Italy

Salice Salentino, the town that time forgot. Everyone else seemed to forget about it, too -- except the old men at the local bar and a handful of people on bicycles crossing a desolate main square. I like old towns like this. Untouched, not always spiffy, but certainly authentic.
