    Sans Souci Palace, Haiti

Audrey takes a walk with a local girl named Mika-Josephine that we met at the beautiful ruins of Sans Souci Palace. Perched in the hills of northern Haiti and built by Henri Christophe after crowning himself King of Haiti in 1811, the structure knew a short life until the great earthquake of 1842 left it in the state we see today. via Instagram http://ift.tt/1uAgJdw

  • Patience! A typical bank borlette, a Haitian lottery shop. Numbers are based on the draw of the New York state lottery. This one on the supremely colorful streets of Cap-Haïtien. We played a ticket for just short of $1. If we win? Thinking we'll quit our jobs and travel the world. via Instagram http://ift.tt/1ES4qfU

The streets of Haiti, just outside the main covered market of Cap-Haïtien. As locals trade in produce, shoes and Vodou (voodoo) paraphernalia, the Sunday morning streets echo with church sounds and Latin beats. via Instagram http://ift.tt/1uC3LvS

  • Cap-Haïtien central market. A covered market whose red wrought-iron gates and roof open to a world of managed chaos and Vodou mysticism. A sea of people end to end, even on a holiday. via Instagram http://ift.tt/11jLEyL

  • Countryside Haiti. A stop at a family guildive rum distillery, outside the town of Milot. Pure sugar cane in, clear fire water out, and a cognac-like process in between. Called guildive because drinking it is supposed to "kill the devil". Local apprentices-in-waiting (kids) look on. via Instagram http://ift.tt/11kSKmJ

  • Bassin Bleu -- in the hills just outside of Jacmel, Haiti. I have a mixed relationship with waterfalls, as many are oversold. This one, however, lived up to its billing and included a little mini-rappel (abseil), a couple of pleasant pools, and plenty of ledges to take a leap. True to its name, the water is blue. And be sure to look closely at the dude flying on the right. via Instagram http://ift.tt/1uLMz7b

  • Haiti...who knew? I say this to myself regularly on this visit. After a cool evening with our own homemade Haitian spiced hot chocolate and a little fire to warm our room, we set off into the hills on a morning hike, through villages, among cowboys, and past families making use of watering holes to end up here. Pic Cabayo, Parc Nacional La Visite. Difficult to choose the best view. via Instagram http://ift.tt/1ujBK7p

  • Haitian houses on a hillside. Taken along the road we hiked from the national park below Haiti's highest peak, down into the capital city of Port-au-Prince. A terrific hike that took us from the silence of pine trees and the occasional horse or two through a succession of hillside villages dotting endless mountains. via Instagram http://ift.tt/1qQtwZL

  • Scenes from a Haitian burial ground. Tombs in rural Haiti include symbolic references to Vodou spirits known as Loa/Lwa and a even a few hints of the modern influence of Christianity on the local ritual. • A typical spice market spread at the Marché en Fer (Iron Market), Port-au-Prince. Everything from dried mushrooms to the makings for Haitian chokolat including bergamot, the shriveled lime-like fruit, and fèy bwadin (leaves). Markets make the world go 'round. In Haiti, too. via Instagram http://ift.tt/1tqmOnO

Fishing boats on the shores of Port Salut, southwestern Haiti

The shores of Port Salut, southwestern Haiti. After some cave exploration nearby, we downed plates of fish fresh from boats like this one. We kicked back, pondered life, took a swim, and relished moments in lengthening shadows. via Instagram http://ift.tt/1xZgefN

    Port Salut Sunset, Haiti

On the shores of Port Salut, southwestern #Haiti. Aiming for sunset, in the shade of a palm. Water is a beautiful carrier for some of light's most life-affirming features: reflection and depth, color and warmth. via Instagram http://ift.tt/1vPqUN8
