Gold Leaf Makers - Mandalay, Burma
When our trishaw driver suggested we stop by a gold leaf factory (between 77th and 78th Streets), we imagined a completely touristy place with a huge gift shop. We hesitated, but gave it a shot...Although the facility was touristy, the process of pounding gold into thin gold leaf was fascinating. With the help of huge hammers, men pound gold into thin strips on pieces of paper. These women then carefully peel the gold from the paper to make the gold leaf that's sold as offerings at Burmese Buddhist temples. Taken in Mandalay, Burma (Myanmar).
