It is uncommon to have a cemetery on the grounds of a Synagogue, but due to tragic circumstances in World War II there are an estimated 2,000 people buried in the Temple of Heroes section of Budapest's Great Synagogue (or Dohany Street Synagogue - Dohány utcai Zsinagóga). The Synagogue was part of the Jewish ghetto in 1944-1945 and housed many people who were forced to leave their homes. Many died; their bodies were collected and buried here afterwards. Notice that a lot of the tombstones list 1945 as the year of death.
